Inverse City's past

Centuries ago, Inverse was a small village next to a huge forest. Hidden deep within this forest was a locked gateway to several hells. A strong warlock used his abilities to unlock the gate and summon one of the ten known God-Beasts. This God-Beast was known as Okii-kaji and ravaged the Earth. It lived to make the world suffer. Thankfully for the planet's sake, a party of warriors put the demon at bay and then used a strong containment spell to seal Okii-kaji beneath the Earth. This legend was slowly forgotten as the centuries past on…

As the years advanced on Earth, humans became more and more cruel to their own kind. Wars were waged, weapons of destruction were built and the world descended into chaos and cold-hearted bitterness. Magic was forgotten, technology dominated and the world had become a darker place. Los Angeles in particular had become the focus point of evil, more apparent, the city of Inverse on it's edge.

In the year 2005 Los Angeles suffered from the biggest earthquake the world had known. This was no ordinary earthquake; it was the return of a great evil, which caused an anomaly in the time stream. After building up enough power over the generations Okii-kaji had broken free, creating the earthquake and the death of many humans. However the freed demon's reign of destruction did not last long as a back up containment spell was released thanks to the remaining holy men on the planet that knew of the legend. The containment came at a price, a crack and change in the combination of the cosmic forces. Those who understand this event named it 'The Breaking'.

The Breaking (easy to understand explanation)

There are four cosmic forces; Time, Space, Chance and Essence.

With the breaking of 'Time' the four forces balanced out to that which existed all those centuries ago. Demons, beasts, rituals, relics, and myths that had been vanquished were reborn and the other three forces were reset.

With the breaking of 'Space' the window to the demon and astral world was opened. Demons and other monsters and creatures slowly started to creep into the world seemingly from out of nowhere.

With the breaking of 'Chance' randomness and chaos shifted to suit the new balance. The chaos grew stronger as more demons entered the real world. This, and, the destruction and death that came with it, was considered the 'bad luck'. The fact that the human race was not wiped out was considered the 'good luck'. Thanks to the breaking of 'Essence', humans stood a chance against these demons.

With the breaking of 'Essence' the force of all power and magic re-entered the world. Reality was changed and it was now possible for mere humans to obtain new skills. For example, if studied, a human could learn magic spells and effectively become a sorcerer or witch. Another example being that human's could now become more than they could before. If trained they had the ability to run faster, hit harder and think smarter.

And so with The Breaking the world has gone back to what it used to be but with one main difference; the technology remains.

Side effects

The Dark Night;
There was a huge side effect caused by The Breaking that covers the City of Inverse and it is still apparent today. All the dust and debris that were sent up into the air from God-Beast's emergence transformed into a dark mist high in the air. And similar to a nuclear winter it has blocked out the sun, thankfully it isn't as dense as most feared when it was first noticed. This mist has been dubbed; "The Cloud."
In daylight hours there is enough light to see clearly although most street lighting stays on, yet there still isn't any actual pure sunlight getting through to the surface. Not all plants and wildlife suffer however, like the humans, most animals have also grown stronger and adaptive. Most animals have left Inverse to brighter towns and fields and other animals have come to Inverse for its darkness.
There is enough sunlight at day times to keep most trees, animals and plants alive, there are even some societies set about to keeping these things alive and huge organizations are researching on how to remove the cloud.
Sadly, there is not enough sunlight to keep smaller animals and plants alive or to kill a vampire, as it is not direct enough. It has also brought forth many other nocturnal creatures.
Most towns, such as Ripon, transport fresh food and vegetables to Inverse as just outside the mists reach, the distinction between night and day is considered normal.

Inverse City's present

The year is now 2015, ten years after The Breaking.
Inverse and the rest of the state has been rebuilt, not to the standards of before the quake, but rebuilt none the less. The world is subjected to monsters of all types from all legends with 'The Cloud' looming above.

Life in Inverse

Life has changed, there is a new set of rules.
However humans continue to live and work. The humans that could focus themselves have a new job. They are 'Hunters'. They live to destroy as much of the evil as possible so the world is not overrun. With their weapons, new gifts from The Breaking, and knowledge from legends and experience, they slowly fight back for the human race…
