Character information…
Full name: Andrew
Pierson Dice
Nickname(s): Andy, "SpaceDrake" (online name)
Species: Human
Sex: Male
Age: 19
Occupation: Writer/Hunter of specific demon
Place of origin: Born
in Jakarta, Indonesia (to Caucasian U.S. parents); spent most of life in Washington
D.C. area.
Place of residence: Until he can find a pad of his own, he usually stays
with Robert Evans.
Main Hangouts: No place in particular - his search for the demon that
essentially destroyed his life doesn't let him settle much. When he needs to
think or write (rare these days), he heads to Inverse Park or the Greenwood
Forest - always armed with his katana.
Physical description: 5'9, 150lbs. Bluish-grey eyes, dirty blond hair which comes down to the back of his neck (a little above his shoulders), very white skin (not unnaturally so, but there's a good bit of Swedish in his background, therefore he is a bit paler than most and burns quite easily), somewhat ruddy facial complexion (thanks to some blasted oil problems with his face), somewhat thin build with his upper body but well-built legs. Normally wears a white trench coat with a solid colour shirt underneath (usually purple, red, blue or green) and black slacks. Always black slacks. Also has a pair of black shoes that are somewhere between sneakers and dress shoes (nice enough to match the pants while being built with enough lightness and flexibility to not greatly restrict his foot movements.) Trench coat does have several good-sized pockets on the outside - but not nearly as many pockets as Rob has. The scabbard of his katana is always attached to the left belt loop on his coat. As for his looks... he's rather thin without being anorexic. His upper body isn't well built at all, but his legs are quite well toned. As for his face... in his words, "If it weren't for the damned acne scars, I'd be a debonair SOB." Said scars aren't hideously large or anything, but they do give him a slightly flushed look most of the time, and they do prevent him from being truly handsome. Clean-shaven when he can be. He does require glasses, but he sports rather nice-looking short-height spectacles, not the huge glasses most men wear. And of course, he won't wear contacts - he doesn't like having things in his eyes.
Personality: Usually quite friendly, if not somewhat aloof and distant. Honestly, the business that brings him to Inverse isn't at all pleasant and as he does not intend to stay, he sees little business in making any meaningful friendships. It is in his nature to be gregarious and a bit withdrawn, but after seeing his entire family and the love of his life senselessly slaughtered by a being of the Everdark, he is understandably distant. He is also highly critical of anyone he considers "stupid" - that is, anyone who goes blindly though life without thinking at all about what they are doing or never take any time to think about life. So long as you try to be intelligent, he's an excellent man to know.
Past history: Andy was on track to become one of the next great science fiction writers. He had been accepted into one of the best English programs in the U.S. (it was even local to boot), and he had finally found the girl of his dreams, Elise Flanders. He had lived in Jakarta, Indonesia for several years as a mid-teenager, however, and he was fond of many people at the International School there. Therefore, he took a trip to Jakarta mere days before Sloan attacked Washington, D.C. When Andy returned, he found that everything he had held dear was destroyed. He spent weeks in agony over the loss of his parents, his friends, the university he was to attend, and his love. Finally, word reached his ears about Inverse, the City of Demons, where the City of Angels used to be located. Gathering his remaining possessions (including his father's rather substantial savings), he vowed to travel to the City of Demons and slay the abomination responsible for robbing him of everything he ever had. Little did he know that the universe had placed the tool of his justice in his hands... (As a note, he knows Rob from fifth grade, when the attended the same school. Andy moved back to Jakarta for several years soon afterward, however. For all he knows at first, Rob is as dead as everyone else he knew from his childhood.)
Often-used Phrase(s): "Thank you for your concern, but I'll be fine on my own." "Justice will be mine, even if I must die for it..."
General skills:
General friendliness, moderate computer skill, decent business sense, good amount
of common sense.
Special abilities: Natural super-proficiency in the English language,
incredible fighting skill granted by the Giken (only when wielding the Giken,
of course).
Quirks: Has a propensity to stutter a bit under pressure. Sometimes mumbles to himself (not out of schizophrenia or anything, he just vocalizes his thoughts). A bit absentminded.
Likes: General "nerd"
things (good sci-fi and fantasy in particular), justice/"goodness"
in general.
Hates: The demon that laid waste to Wasington D.C, people he considers
"idiots" (see above), tobacco smoke.
Fears: That he might fail in his self-appointed quest. All other fears
seem trivial compared to this.
Defects: Semi-blind without glasses - while he can still see general
shapes with some accuracy without them, he cannot read normal text more than
2 feet away from him without glasses, and at 10 or more feet he cannot make
out any details on an object at all unless he has his glasses. Also, eyes are
oddly sensitive to direct light. Skin somewhat more UV-intolerant than most
people's.
Natural weapons: None.
Other weapons: The Giken (trans. Blade of Justice), and a foot-long
dagger (which is FAR less effective than the Giken.)
Items usually held: The Giken, dagger, backpack with clothing/water/food
in it which is dropped during combat, Palmtop computer which is in a coat pocket,
wallet with cash and ID.
Special possessions: Nothing that he doesn't usually carry with himself,
but the Giken can certainly be considered a special item. Note below;
The Giken: Andy's sword is no ordinary katana. He happened upon it at a sale the U.S. Embassy held in Jakarta when he was a young teen. The merchant who was selling the sword seemed oddly anxious to be rid of it, and Andy always liked collecting blades. He was surprised at the fact that it seemed to be old and yet still in excellent condition, and quite light and sharp to boot. What he doesn't know is that this blade is the Giken, the Sword of Justice. It arrived in Indonesia at the hand of its previous owner, who had brought it with him when the Japanese army invaded the area during World War II. Its history can be traced back to the fabled weapon smith Murasame, the disciple of Masamune, greatest of all Japanese sword smiths (and possibly the greatest smith the world has ever seen.) While this blade is not *the* Murasame - the fabled Blade of Death that is the counterpart to *the* Masamune, the Blade of Life - it is a lesser brother of it and is still incredibly powerful, especially in the hands of anyone seeking justice or revenge. The sword's name literally means "Sword of Justice". However, as it is a work of Murasame and not Masamune, it carries something of a curse with it. If one who has a just vendetta to settle uses it, he will fight like few men can, so long as he has the blade in his hands. It grants him incredible skill and power, and the blade itself becomes even more effective than it normally is. However, such power has to have a price - in this case, once the user of the Giken achieves the justice he sought by the sword, he too is doomed to die either in the battle with his foe (alongside his foe), or soon afterward. It is the price a man must pay for being given the power to get the vengeance he seeks. Of course, Andy has no idea about any of this - all he knows is that he seems to have some kind of incredible "innate skill" with this one blade. Thus, he does not see that he is already doomed...
Family: None left
living. Vengeance is all he has left.
Friends: Rob Evans. He gets along with most people, however.
Enemies: He finds demons in general distasteful though he is aware that
not all of them are completely evil. He does obviously harbour a deep hatred
for the demon that laid D.C. to waste.
One-line summary: Cursed swordsman in search of justice...
